Board

A distinction of Johnson’s “War on Poverty” was the acknowledgement that those experiencing poverty were well-suited to make decisions that affect not only them, but their fellow citizens in similar predicaments. To this end, many of the programs introduced at that time had requirements that those voices be heard loudly and often above others. Community Action is one such program, with the requirement to have an active Board with at least one-third of its membership working to escape poverty, working directly to help those in poverty, or representing a success story of escaping poverty.
